Pretty Lights – Around The Block ft. Talib Kweli
As one of my introductions to electronic music, Pretty Lights will always hold a special place in my heart and confirmed release dates for upcoming projects are always a plus for me. Tonight he confirmed that his upcoming album A Color Map of the Sun will be released 7/2 for free via his own label PLM and gave out the lead single Around The Block which features vocals from none other than Talib Kweli.
“It has been 2 years, 5 months and 24 days since I last released a record. I am properly delighted to announce the release of my new full-length album “A Color Map of the Sun.” I began work on this album/project/experiment in February of 2011 and spent a year creating my own vinyl collection of everything I needed to produce the album I heard in my head. I spent the next year producing songs with homemade vinyl samples and a big crazy analog synth I built just for this album. It is truly Analog Electronica. It’s soulful electro hip-hop that went back in time to learn from the life of its smooth ass grandparents.” -Derek Vincent Smith

Pretty Lights vs. The End Of The World 2012
0Sometimes the talents of Derek Vincent Smith aka Pretty Lights just flat out astound me. One of his most appealing characteristics to me is his appreciation of not only what is good about new music, but keeping his roots with him and infusing his sounds with those that were big in the past. Placing Black Sabbath over his own drum tracks, adding in lyrics from The Doors and R.E.M.’s end of the world anthem, and then a hip-hop verse just goes to show that his work is truly innovative and expansive. Good on ya man, TNJ loves what comes out of the speakers when the Pretty Lights name is attached.

Pretty Lights – So Bright ft. Eligh

The Colorado based hip-hop/funk/dubstep/soul king Derrick Vincent Smith aka Pretty Lights is one of the most impressive artists of our generation in my own personal opinion. Never settling simply for success, he consistently keeps pushing the boundaries of electronic music, like creating all of his own samples, pressing them onto vinyl himself, and then using them in his own productions. This track was an unintentional leak off his upcoming album which comes complete with a documentary; obviously this is a highly anticipated one for me.
UPDATE: Turns out this one just got a video of Derrick throwing down at the prestigious Red Rocks Amphitheater with the rest of his Pretty Lights Music clique. Hell yeah

Pretty Lights – You Get High + 2011 NYE Denver Recap Video
0
Pretty Lights is back with some brand new material as well as a video recapping his NYE in Denver this year. The track, You Get High, finds Derek Vincent Smith back on his classic groovy sample-heavy hip hop best best described by himself as “a slow-mo disco stomp”. These are the last releases before his next album Red Rocks in August, which I couldn’t be more excited for. He produced the entire thing on self-made vinyl which continues to prove why Pretty Lights seperates himself from the competition in his craft. Check out the video and be sure to grab the free download from Grooveshark!

They now have full album for all of you guys available for a free download and it delivers that same signature Manic Focus has made me a huge fan of throughout the buildup to this release. Take a listen to the masterful sampling and instrumentation of John McCarten aka Manic Focus and enjoy!

Gary Jules – Mad World (Manic Focus Remix)

Sometimes it’s simply better off leaving genres untouched. This bass & sample heavy take on Gary Jules classic Mad World done by Manic Focus leaves nothing to be desired. Those who enjoy music from Pretty Lights or KOAN Sound should quickly become familiar with Manic Focus because they capture that same feel that these two acts do so well.
Enjoy!

Shameless Shuffle Thursday Vol. 001
0
Welcome to the first installation of a special segment called Shameless Shuffle Thursday in which I’ve left my iTunes on shuffle for about an hour and picked my favorite songs to share with you guys so that you can hopefully find some of your favorites floating around your iTunes! First off I’ve got some old school Lil Wayne which was one of the first songs I listened to that wasn’t a Top 40 station and I was hooked. I’m a huge fan of lyrical rap so it’s obvious that Common is a staple in my iTunes and my introduction was through Kanye West’s Late Registration album on the song My Way Home. Total Fascination is one of Pretty Lights‘ best productions in my opinion with all of the sampling and bass done to perfection. Lastly, I was a MONSTER Death Cab for Cutie fan for a very long time so it only seems right that the melancholic ballad that topped my iTunes in plays by almost 200 plays, Grapevine Fires, was one of the first tracks to appear on shuffle.
