Apart from being a pioneer of the “Dirty South” sound, Mike Dean has been working with Kanye West since the beginning. Though his official writing credits may only reach back to Graduation, he has been involved in at least the mixing process on each of his albums since The College Dropout, and has become a more prominent collaborator over time. Along with Jeff Bhasker, he carried much of the instrumental work on 808′s, MBDTF, and Watch The Throne (if you hear keys or guitar on a Kanye track from this era it’s quite possibly Dean). The producer spoke with HuffPost Live about his work on Yeezus, as well as how Kanye’s production techniques have addapted over time.

It seems as though Logic is continuing his ascension to the top of the rap industry and stopped by Power 106 & the L.A. Leakers on his way. They simply said “we want to hear more shit” and after thinking for about 5 seconds, the man starts to rattle off one of the most unbelievable lyrical performances I’ve heard in a while. There seems to be some discrepancy as to whether this is a “freestyle” or him spitting something he’s previously written for the album; to be frank it doesn’t matter, it’s unbelievable no matter how you slice it. No official word yet as to when his Def Jam debut album will become public but after a performance like this we can’t wait.

The Australian outfit will make a stop at The Bowery Ballroom this Tuesday and Wednesday (which TNJ will be at!) and just this morning they unveiled a remix of their track If So remixed by TheFatRat and made it available for free download. These guys really do make unbelievable music and with the addition of this remix fit for your next party, there’s now no excuse not to get them on your speakers ASAP.

My ear has gradually moved away from real “club-type” tracks due to the fact that 95% of the music coming out pretty much sounded the same. However, SoundCloud occasionally does a great job with that on shuffle feature and I end up loving a song I never even looked at. Call it dumb luck but this Rumble EP from Garmiani, his debut on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mac Records, has a real fresh sound and a ton of energy as you’d expect from a DMR release. Whatever synth he’s got during the breakdown of the title track (and vocal mix) is a winner and the other track Dance Motherfucker is meant for only the biggest of festival speakers. And that sax is perfect…almost as good as the sexy sax man.

There are certain times when you just have to let your jaw sink to the floor when you see the kind of talent that hangs in the same room. This video, introducing the Jay-Z and Samsung partnership to release his next album Magna Carta Holy Grail, features a behind-the-scenes sit down showing Jigga in the room with Timbaland, Rick Rubin, Pharrell & Swizz Beatz. There seems to be some discrepancy as to who “the homeless guy” in the video is. That’s Rick Rubin and you should go read about him if you want to be a good music fan. The first million Samsung Galaxy users who download a custom app on June 24th will be given the album for free three days before the rest of the world on July 4th; everyone else will have to wait until July 7th.

We don’t have any rules. Everyone’s trying to figure it out. That’s why the internet’s like the wild west. The wild wild west. We need to write the new rules.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have officially gained my full attention. Yes, Thrift Shop has 343 million view on YouTube and has been given the full blown Top 40 treatment leading to my temporary hatred of the song but they may very well be the smartest guys in the industry. After reading a piece on WhiteRaverRafting about an interview done with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ manager and FINALLY getting a chance to listen to The Heist, I’m blown away by their story and movement.

If you took the lyrics off the instrumental the beats would still be songs in their own right (a distinction I’d give old school Kanye West and Xaphoon Jones production) and Macklemore’s ability to bring a message or story to a song is extraordinary. Take the re-release of their 2010 song ‘Stay At Home Dad’ for example; the goofy wordplay detailing the struggles being a stay at home Dad over a super-smooth beat (that sampled a Xaphoon Jones production by the way). Never thought I’d ever be hearing the phrase “Shit, it’s 4 o’clock, time for OPRAAAHHH” in a hip-hop track. Maybe these dudes should link up with the dude Lil Dicky?

It’s amazing how intelligent the Lawrence brothers of Disclosure are about the products they put out. It’s no accident that songs fall into place the way they do (as schizophrenic as the creation process can be) and listening to people as talented as them recount how each track comes to be is awesome. You can see how their thought progress carried them through the album writing process and where their influences are. It may just be because of the Yeezus leak but their ability to call on old school styles (deep house, garage and even J. Dilla in their case) and rework them to fit modern tastes reminds me a lot of old school Kanye West. Regardless their album Settle is one of the best projects to come out this year across genres and scenes so enjoy a run through of each track from the mouth of the artists.

They said it wasn’t possible but it turns out that Yeezus, the 6th studio album from Kanye West, leaked this morning in its entirety. I’m gonna start the whole post off by saying SUPPORT THE MUSIC AND BUY THIS MUSIC WHEN IT COMES OUT 6/18. I would point you all to a pre-order link but Kanye West never made one available so if you want this for yourself get to the record stores or iTunes 6/18 and buy it. That said, after a full listen through I still am trying to wrap my head around what I just heard.
