Progressive House

An interview with Auvic

Recently I had the opportunity to throw some questions at up-and-comer Auvic, who’s production style is incredibly unique. In a scene where it seems artists are recently struggling to create something different, his new album Voices is a diamond in the rough. After hearing Gareth Emery use his track “Highways & Highways” in both his Sirius XM show and his weekly podcast, I was so hyped on the sound that I had to reach out and get some details. Auvic was kind enough to answer all of my questions, and so below is the conversation that followed.

Q. First off I want to thank you on behalf of TNJ for doing this Q&A. A few of us here recently took a peak through your new Voices album and we were truly astonished, as is everyone I’ve shown it to. Was there any specific inspiration or idea behind the album, or was it just a collection of your more recent work?
A. No Problem. Voices was never really ‘planned.’ Before this, I was mainly writing neo-classical complex electro stuff and funky complex electro, planning albums and all, but that all got pushed aside when I wanted to do something else, which was Voices. I had drafts and drafts of Induce Insomnia, which was the first track, but I had abandoned it because I didn’t have enough inspiration or ideas to continue on. A month or two later, I wrote ‘Voices,’ and that’s where it all clicked, and I knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it. As a whole, it’s inspired by insomnia, cityscapes, good times, funky music vibes, personal situations, and certain colors and emotions.

Q. The album has been getting some support by some big names, most notably Gareth Emery. Did he contact you regarding your music? And how does it feel to have these huge names playing your tracks?
A. Quite honestly, I’m not really too big on names and such. I first got some support like that when I released Starships from Sean Tyas, which was pretty cool. With Gareth Emery, I read on a Soundcloud comment somewhere that he played it on his radio show and his podcast. It feels pretty sweet.

Q. I’ve noticed from your Facebook profile that it seems you’ve had a bit of an up-and-down relationship towards music. Are there any specific artists you credit for your current involvement in the EDM scene?
A. When it comes to EDM alone, my two greatest tangible influences are Joey Youngman, aka Wolfgang Gartner, and Daft Punk. These two are geniuses, and I’ve spent countless nights just studying and studying their music and learning more about them. The more intangible ones are Kaskade and Deadmau5, I suppose since you may not be able to hear much similarities. I’ve been compared to Joe Garston and Mord Fustang, but honestly, that’s just two songs that I have that kind of sound like them, I guess.

Q. Well now that we’ve got a bit of insight into your music and inspiration, it’s time for some unrelated questions. What are your hobbies outside of music?
A. Going out and chilling with friends. I don’t really do anything else. Currently I’m studying full-time at Berklee.

Q. What’s something you couldn’t get by in life without?
A. My ears. If music never existed, I probably wouldn’t have either.

Q. If you were stranded on an island with an MP3 player that held only three songs, which three songs would you choose?
A. I would choose Face to Face by Daft Punk, my favorite song in the world. I would choose Counting Stars by Nujabes, my second favorite song in the world. And lastly, I would choose a song that I wrote more than 3 years ago for someone because it’s special.

Q. Seeing as you draw some influence from Daft Punk, you must be pretty psyched for Random Access Memories. Any opinion on the first single “Get Lucky”?
A. I’m literally geeking out over it. I’ve listened to it ever since bits of it have been released, and as we speak I’m listening to the radio edit which I’ve been playing on repeat for the past hour or so. Before that, I’ve even recreated and put together pieces of that song so I can get the full effect, just for fun.

Q. So the big question, what’ can we expect from you in the future? Any big ideas or plans for how you’ll be following up Voices?
A. I am planning MAJOR things. I’m currently writing several EP’s, a few collaborations, and other minor things. I’ve already started my 14-track album ‘Voices Call,’ while working on my first ‘planned’ album called ‘Beyond Ascendance.’ I’m also coming up with other album ideas as well, but they haven’t taken form yet.

Wow, seems like you’ve got your work cut out for you. It’s great to see such ambition, and I speak for all of us when I say that I can’t wait for it all to come together. We really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions, and wish you good luck with all your future musical endeavors!
A. Awesome, sweet! Thanks!

Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy Trash – Reload ft. John Martin (Vocal Mix)

Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy Trash - Reload ft. John Martin (Vocal Mix)

This is about as progressive house as progressive house can get. Without the additional vocals of John Martin, this Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash collab was a bit lacking for me. It’s not that I don’t think it’s music that will get you absolutely WILD at a festival/live setting, I’d just like the breakdowns in the songs I listen to to include more than just a repeat of the same 8 bars in different voices. That said, this is perfectly timed to coincide with the quickly approaching festival season where I’m sure this song will be blared out countless times.

Alex Metric & Mark Yardley – Ilium

Alex Metric - Ilium

Alex Metric is back with a new single off his forthcoming EP Ammunition Pt. 3. This new song titled “Ilium“, is such a great one. Alex even said his next EP will be intended for raves, and he was not off the mark with that statement. Right from the get go this song got a nice beat that just makes you want to move. As the song progresses I just get more into it, and want to move faster. The “drop” comes and then you just fall in love with the song. This track has got some soft mellow spots, but they’ve got a happy vibe to them, and it makes you just want to put your arm around the shoulder of your best friend, and start rocking to the beat. After the little bridge the song drops again and it makes you wish you were dancing to this with all your friends. It puts you in a rave paradise. This new EP is coming out April 2nd on OWSLA, and April 1st if you are a NEST member. I have a feeling this EP will be a memorable one.

Capital Cities – Safe & Sound (Tommie Sunshine & Live City Remix)

Capital Cities - Safe & Sound (Tommie Sunshine & Live City Remix)

Very often, the tracks that producers choose to remix says a lot about the artist them self. By that logic, there’s nothing but great things to say about Tommie Sunshine and Live City; choosing to remix Capital Cities is always a good thing. The track Safe & Sound has been a favorite of mine from riiight around the time this whole thing started up so best believe this is gonna find its way into my mixes ASAP.

Blackburner ft. Geri X- In Love With The City (Synchronice Remix)

Blackburner ft. Geri X- In Love With The City (Synchronice Remix) OUT FOR FREE

Well I’m guessing you can call this a successful weekend for Synchronice. The Saulsky brothers had their remix of Avicii & Nicky Romero’s collab I Could Be The One played out by by Porter Robinson during his magical Ultra Music Festival set at sunset and concurrently surpassed the 15K mark of Facebook fans. The brothers reciprocated the love by giving out their progressive house remix of Blackburner for FREE and further solidifying that these guys are on a B-Line for the top. As with all Synchronice tracks, stay tuned for the second breakdown…that’s where the magic happens.

Video: Mat Zo & Porter Robinson – Easy (Original Mix)

Video Mat Zo & Porter Robinson - Easy (Original Mix)

It was only a matter of time before we were treated with the unveiling of the official video for Porter Robinson & Mat Zo’s monster crossover dance hit Easy. Turns out today was the day and we couldn’t be happier; the Japanese anime style video follows a girl on her escape from a smogged-ver industrial city to a beautiful cherry orchard that perfectly accentuate the feel-good vibe of the track.

Tommy Trash – Monkey See Monkey Do (Remixes)

Back in 2011 Tommy Trash released a slew of original tracks and remixes that have led to his current popularity. One of those original tracks that may have gotten a bit lost in the shuffle was Monkey See Monkey Do. Have no fear however because the year is 2013 and not only has Tommy Trash added his own slammin’ re-edit of his original tune, but Tom Staar, Nom De Strip & Zero Hero have each added their own interpretation of how awesome this song can sound. From heavy electro to progressive house this Remix EP has a little something for everyone and is definitely a must download.

Arty ft. Chris James – Together We Are (M Machine Remix)

Together We Are

Together We Are

It’s extremely rare that I find a track that I listen to in full and then decide “Wow. I need to replay that about 6 times.” The M Machine have been absolutely tearing 2013 apart. It seems that every single release just sounds so fresh, and regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of their style, you can’t help but respect their quest for originality. M Machine’s recently-released remix of Arty ft. Chris James’ progressive house anthem Together We Are combines such perfect chords that almost scream for your attention, wonderfully building up to a complete change-of-pace electro drop that I couldn’t imagine hearing live.

As mentioned, It’s not usually I completely gush over a track, especially a remix. But if anyone’s capable of doing that to me, it’s my long-term favorite M Machine. [That's what she said.] Check out the remix below, posted on Arty’s soundcloud.

Avicii – X You

Avicii-X-You

This is more a post of news-worthiness than anything else because although most progressive house kinda sounds the same to me, it’s worth a post when Avicii combines samples submitted from over 4000 people from 140 different countries. He partnered up with Ericsson to crowd source a hit song and took winning samples from Kian Seng (melody), Naxsy (bassline), Martin Kupilas (beat & rhythm), ВАНЯ ХАКСИ (break) and Christian Westphalen, Mateusz Kolata & Jonathan Madray (effects)to construct this song. Although this only adds to the fact that this guy is just a walking talking gimmick with sponsorship deals with Ralph Polo Lauren and having his own hotel to rent out for WMC. Grab the track on iTunes if you like and check the video below!

Showtek & Noisecontrollers – Get loose

Showtek & Noisecontrollers - Get Loose

Amazing, epic, wonderful, hard-hitting, banger. All words that can be used to describe this upcoming song “Get Loose,” but none of them would do it justice, which i don’t say too often. Showtek & Noisecontrollers might not be the biggest out there like Tiesto, Prydz, Skrillex, etc, but this song will send them flying through the ranks. Not a usual sounding song from these artists, which sort of confused me. Then i was informed that this song will in fact be released on OWSLA’s label. A very big shock since Showtek has never been associated with OWSLA in any sense, and has had songs come out on labels such as Spinnin’ Records. This song has the combinations of multiple genres of electronic music. It is really something special. If you like house you’ll love it. If you like dubstep if you’ll love it. It now makes sense why this song would be released on OWSLA’s label. It’s just something different and that’s what OWSLA is best at. If you’re looking for diversity be sure to check out all of OWSLA’s artists. No info on the release date yet, but this long radio rip will do for now.
