Glitch Hop
An interview with Auvic

Recently I had the opportunity to throw some questions at up-and-comer Auvic, who’s production style is incredibly unique. In a scene where it seems artists are recently struggling to create something different, his new album Voices is a diamond in the rough. After hearing Gareth Emery use his track “Highways & Highways” in both his Sirius XM show and his weekly podcast, I was so hyped on the sound that I had to reach out and get some details. Auvic was kind enough to answer all of my questions, and so below is the conversation that followed.
Q. First off I want to thank you on behalf of TNJ for doing this Q&A. A few of us here recently took a peak through your new Voices album and we were truly astonished, as is everyone I’ve shown it to. Was there any specific inspiration or idea behind the album, or was it just a collection of your more recent work?
A. No Problem. Voices was never really ‘planned.’ Before this, I was mainly writing neo-classical complex electro stuff and funky complex electro, planning albums and all, but that all got pushed aside when I wanted to do something else, which was Voices. I had drafts and drafts of Induce Insomnia, which was the first track, but I had abandoned it because I didn’t have enough inspiration or ideas to continue on. A month or two later, I wrote ‘Voices,’ and that’s where it all clicked, and I knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it. As a whole, it’s inspired by insomnia, cityscapes, good times, funky music vibes, personal situations, and certain colors and emotions.
Q. The album has been getting some support by some big names, most notably Gareth Emery. Did he contact you regarding your music? And how does it feel to have these huge names playing your tracks?
A. Quite honestly, I’m not really too big on names and such. I first got some support like that when I released Starships from Sean Tyas, which was pretty cool. With Gareth Emery, I read on a Soundcloud comment somewhere that he played it on his radio show and his podcast. It feels pretty sweet.
Q. I’ve noticed from your Facebook profile that it seems you’ve had a bit of an up-and-down relationship towards music. Are there any specific artists you credit for your current involvement in the EDM scene?
A. When it comes to EDM alone, my two greatest tangible influences are Joey Youngman, aka Wolfgang Gartner, and Daft Punk. These two are geniuses, and I’ve spent countless nights just studying and studying their music and learning more about them. The more intangible ones are Kaskade and Deadmau5, I suppose since you may not be able to hear much similarities. I’ve been compared to Joe Garston and Mord Fustang, but honestly, that’s just two songs that I have that kind of sound like them, I guess.
Q. Well now that we’ve got a bit of insight into your music and inspiration, it’s time for some unrelated questions. What are your hobbies outside of music?
A. Going out and chilling with friends. I don’t really do anything else. Currently I’m studying full-time at Berklee.
Q. What’s something you couldn’t get by in life without?
A. My ears. If music never existed, I probably wouldn’t have either.
Q. If you were stranded on an island with an MP3 player that held only three songs, which three songs would you choose?
A. I would choose Face to Face by Daft Punk, my favorite song in the world. I would choose Counting Stars by Nujabes, my second favorite song in the world. And lastly, I would choose a song that I wrote more than 3 years ago for someone because it’s special.
Q. Seeing as you draw some influence from Daft Punk, you must be pretty psyched for Random Access Memories. Any opinion on the first single “Get Lucky”?
A. I’m literally geeking out over it. I’ve listened to it ever since bits of it have been released, and as we speak I’m listening to the radio edit which I’ve been playing on repeat for the past hour or so. Before that, I’ve even recreated and put together pieces of that song so I can get the full effect, just for fun.
Q. So the big question, what’ can we expect from you in the future? Any big ideas or plans for how you’ll be following up Voices?
A. I am planning MAJOR things. I’m currently writing several EP’s, a few collaborations, and other minor things. I’ve already started my 14-track album ‘Voices Call,’ while working on my first ‘planned’ album called ‘Beyond Ascendance.’ I’m also coming up with other album ideas as well, but they haven’t taken form yet.
Wow, seems like you’ve got your work cut out for you. It’s great to see such ambition, and I speak for all of us when I say that I can’t wait for it all to come together. We really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions, and wish you good luck with all your future musical endeavors!
A. Awesome, sweet! Thanks!

Pretty Lights – Around The Block ft. Talib Kweli
As one of my introductions to electronic music, Pretty Lights will always hold a special place in my heart and confirmed release dates for upcoming projects are always a plus for me. Tonight he confirmed that his upcoming album A Color Map of the Sun will be released 7/2 for free via his own label PLM and gave out the lead single Around The Block which features vocals from none other than Talib Kweli.
“It has been 2 years, 5 months and 24 days since I last released a record. I am properly delighted to announce the release of my new full-length album “A Color Map of the Sun.” I began work on this album/project/experiment in February of 2011 and spent a year creating my own vinyl collection of everything I needed to produce the album I heard in my head. I spent the next year producing songs with homemade vinyl samples and a big crazy analog synth I built just for this album. It is truly Analog Electronica. It’s soulful electro hip-hop that went back in time to learn from the life of its smooth ass grandparents.” -Derek Vincent Smith

Jay-Z – Can I Get A.. (Big Gigantic Remix)
Oh lord there are few things better than a free remix from Big Gigantic. These two were my introduction to electronic music when they stopped by Binghamton University in September 2011 and I have been absolutely in LOVE with them since then and were lucky enough to catch them at Camp Bisco XI this past summer. Their production is nearly flawless and that eargasmic sexaphone is such a damn PERFECT addition to the classic bars of Jay-Z in this instance. They seem to work in perfect unison with hip-hop vocals layered over their instrumentals and if you haven’t their remix of Kanye West’s track Get ‘Em High you are missing out on life (check it out after the jump if you happen to be in that unfortunate group).

Rudimental Ft. John Newman- Feel The Love (Kill Paris Remix)

Kill Paris put his name on the map back in late February with his To A New Earth EP, out now on the OWSLA label. This man is at it again with his newest remix to Rudimental’s year old single featuring John Newman. This LA based producer makes music so funky that you almost think the White Cherry’s song “Play that funky music white boy” is about him, and this song is no different. I had the pleasure of seeing the debut of Kill Paris at his first Ultra Music Festival performance week one, early on a Saturday afternoon and he certainly did not disappoint. A little bit into his set he announced to the crowd that he was about to play a new song and then this beauty came slamming through the speakers at the OWSLA stage. Be sure to give this one a listen, out now on Beatport.

ETC!ETC! & Brillz – New Jack Swoop
ETC!ETC! & Brillz making a glitch hop edit of their monster collaboration New Jack Swoop is the best thing to happen to my DJ sets in a hot minute. The original track is an unforgiving trapstyle BANGER (and I don’t use that word often) filled with bursting bubble synths and an epic appergiated breakdown; this remix takes everything that was aggressive about the original and replaces it with a heaping helping of funk. Infusing hip-hop vocals and drum tracks, I know for a fact that while the original was a dance floor destroyer at 140 BPM, I’m now entertaining the fact that this track may have been better at the cool cruising 100 BPM this edit rocks at.

Kill Paris – To A New Earth EP
0I really was trying not to do any posts tonight with this test tomorrow and all but this was just too much to ignore. We finally have gotten the unveiling of the latest release out of Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint courtesy of the panty dropping sensual sounds of Kill Paris. We’ve followed his ascension into the highest ranks of the electronic music scene with his R&B and bass influenced sounds that capture a niche previously left vacant. The three original tracks ooze of Corey Bakers magic touch and all the stops were pulled out when accumulating remixes; stars like GRiZ, Gramatik and Candyland all offered a hand in making this a monstrous EP amongst others. The original title track is my personal favorite at the moment so grab the full release on Beatport and enjoy the funk!

Kill Paris – Slap Me (GRiZ Remix)
0You had to know this was coming. Future funk fans rejoice, GRiZ got a hold of a track from the To A New World EP, the upcoming OWSLA debut for Kill Paris and it is everything you could’ve possibly hoped for. As I continue cleaning out my library of all the tracks this week that I forgot to post, I couldn’t ignore the signature bass slapping and wailing synths of a GRiZ production. It’s amazing how quickly and accurately Skrillex and the rest of his OWSLA label evaluate and facilitate the growth of the talent in this burgeoning scene. This To A New World EP is definitely one of my most anticipated releases coming in the near future; if nothing else it will only serve to solidify Corey Baker amongst the best of the best.

Codes – Let Me Break It Down
0Codes isn’t really well known, but he just released The Get Down EP on Slowroast records the other day. “Let Me Break It Down” is a nice little funky tune to mend your day. The Let me Break it down is my favorite from the EP. All of the songs on the EP are very different sounding, and have their own aspect to it. This tune’s just got a cool funky beat to it mixed in with a variety of “fun” sounds. One of those in particular that repeats through the song is very similar to the drop noise in “I Rave you”, which is a great track. Overall a soft electronic track that’ll make you move to the beat. Download link for the EP is below.

Gramatik – Bluestep (2012 Recap Video)
0This must be a good day for you guys because rather than having to read me rambling on about the music, we can leave it to the artist to introduce the song. I’ve been a huge fan of Gramatik and his hip-hop and soulful take on electronic music so grab the free download courtesy of his SoundCloud (which you can find the link to below) on Thursday and check out this recap video with footage from show/festival footage from the US, Canada, Russia, Belgium & Austria.
Bluestep is a signature Gramatik style genre clash. Lately I’ve been really into combining the vibes of raw 50′s and 60′s Blues with all kinds of EDM genres and one of the results is Bluestep. It’s a dynamic mixture of Blues and Dubstep, a plethora of screaming guitar, howling vocals and big bass, capturing the raw energies of both music worlds in a hopefully cohesive, possibly outrageous picture.

Pegboard Nerds ft. Splitbreed – We Are One (Radio Edit)
0This is probably the first time I’ve actually sat down and listened to a track from Pegboard Nerds and I gotta say I’m really impressed. They categorized the track as “glitch pop” on their SoundCloud and this fits the bill pretty well as far as I’m concerned. It’s got a similar rhythm to Bangarang and I love the tempo that it rides at. I’m not familiar with Splitbreed’s music but apparently they’re a 4 piece EDM band consisting of two vocalists, a drummer and a DJ that has definitely sparked some interest. Usual links below!
